Anatomy of an Athlete

History and chemistry double-major Max Findley '15, the former co-captain of Haverford’s fencing team, took some time to talk to Haverford magazine about the venerable sport of fencing and why it has held him in thrall since elementary school. History Lesson: John Coleman Goes Undercover

John R. Coleman, Haverford’s ninth president, published his book Blue Collar Journal in 1974 and caused a sensation. The book was based on his experiences going incognito on a “secret” sabbatical, during which he hauled trash in a small town in Maryland, made sandwiches in a Boston restaurant, and dug sewer lines in Atlanta.

“History Lesson” is a regular series in Haverford magazine.

What’s New at The HaverFarm?

HaverFarm is the name for both the student-run club and the plots of land where food is grown: one behind HCA’s apartment 19, a smaller one behind HCA 22, and the third, larger space behind the facilities and maintenance building. It was born out of an environmental studies senior capstone class project in 2013, and, since then, has grown to include the construction of a new greenhouse and the hiring of an inaugural farm fellow.

Where They’re Headed: Robin Banerji ’15

Where They’re Headed

Robin Banerji ’15 is starting a career in economic analysis at Moody’s Analytics.

“Over my four years, I’ve found that my writing has evolved to be more organized, clearer, and limited to the data and analysis that my professors and peers have found convincing.”

Part of the Where They’re Headed series in the Haverblog.

After his junior year, he was funded by the Center for Peace and Global Citizenship to travel to Bihar, India, to work with Jeevika, while gathering data for his senior thesis.

Office Hour – Sorelle Friedler

Much of Assistant Professor of Computer Science Sorelle Friedler’s research takes place in a heady realm known as “high-dimensional space”—used to model data sets with many attributes—where, instead of the two or three dimensions most of us are familiar with, there can be 250 or even 1,000 dimensions.

Read Office Hour in the Spring/Summer 2015 issue of Haverford Magazine.

The Campus

Established nearly 80 years ago by the Campus Club, the 2.2-mile Nature Trail encircling Haverford College’s campus provides a shady path for dog walkers, joggers and runners.

Short sections of Haverford's Nature Trail are being resurfaced for enhanced safety. The material is made from recycled truck tires, and looks similar to wood chips. Photo: Patrick Montero.
