Institutional Diversity, Equity, and Access
Active Voice Dialogues
The Division of Institutional Diversity, Equity, and Access (IDEA) is excited to launch a new initiative—Active Voice: Sustained Dialogues Toward Antiracism—that brings together students and employees in educational, relationship-building, and transformative experiences. Through these dialogues, the initiative expands possibilities for new and renewed ways of thinking about and acting in response to Haverford’s investment in ethical engagement and development for all members of our community.
Active Voice: Sustained Dialogues Toward Antiracism aims to support the practice of open and challenging communication within and across the Haverford campus community. This work will encourage students, staff, and faculty to listen deeply and critically explore their stories, histories, and experiences through the practice of talking across differences. Sponsored across the Division of Institutional Diversity, Equity, and Access; the Office of Student Life; and the Office of the Provost, the initiative will create opportunities and resources for the Haverford community to explore the salient social and political issues that connect and divide us as we strengthen our individual and communal sense of belonging, purpose, and value.
Active Voice groups are composed of students and employees that meet to discuss race/racism in an intersectional, honest, probing and constructive way. The inaugural groups (two groups of approximately 10-12 people, including 2 facilitators) in Spring 2024 will meet over breakfast, lunch or dinner from early-February to mid-April and will engage short readings, films, or other relevant materials, and connect them with their own histories and experiences related to identity at Haverford. Participants will think and talk about how these issues have impacted the Haverford community and how individuals and groups within the College might initiate and/or participate in constructive action.
