Institutional Diversity, Equity, and Access
Proactive Search Strategies
In partnership with Human Resources, IDEA developed a two-part workshop as they relate to recruitment and hiring efforts. The College is committed to an inclusive learning environment that begins with search committee members critically engaging in a reflective and learning process about the constantly changing landscape of higher education and values of equity and access.
The workshop covers implicit bias and the ways that various forms of cognitive errors and passive search practices often can lead to inequitable outcomes. As of AY 2024-25, any employees — faculty and staff — participating in a search committee are now required to attend this training. Students serving on a committee and any external committee members should plan to attend as well. The workshop is offered on a monthly basis throughout every semester.
- Session one focuses on identifying and lessening the impact of biases, and promoting appreciative search practices.
- Session two focuses on the logistics, framing, and processes of running and participating in a search.
