Institutional Diversity, Equity, and Access
The Division of Institutional Diversity, Equity, and Access (IDEA) is excited to launch initiatives that bring together students and employees in educational, relationship-building, and transformative experiences. Through dialogues, travel, and research, these initiatives open possibilities for new and renewed ways of thinking about and acting in response to Haverford’s investment in ethical engagement and development for all members of our community. Additional sponsorship from the Divisions of Institutional Diversity, Equity, and Access; the Office of Student Life; and the Office of the Provost will support some aspects of this work.
Active Voice: Sustained Dialogues Toward Antiracism
In academic year 2023-24, Active Voice will support the practice of open and challenging communication within and across the Haverford campus community. Building on findings from the Campus Climate Survey, this work will encourage students, staff, and faculty to listen deeply and critically explore their stories, histories, and experiences through the practice of talking across differences.
An open call for facilitators and training will be shared with students and employees in August 2023.

The Annual Civil Rights Trip
An opportunity for Haverford students and employees to travel to the American South as they learn about social justice action, race and American democracy, the Civil Rights Trip will include the National Center for Civil and Human Rights in Atlanta and the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial in Atlanta, Georgia as well as the National Memorial for Peace & Justice (NMPJ) in Montgomery, Alabama. The NMPJ is the nation's first memorial dedicated to the legacy of enslaved black people, people terrorized by lynching, African Americans humiliated by racial segregation and Jim Crow, and people of color burdened with contemporary presumptions of guilt and police violence. The trip will also include a number of other notable civil rights sites in Alabama. Planning is in place for a Spring 2024 launch.

Restorative Practices
Restorative Practices at Haverford facilitates conversations about misunderstanding, conflict, and harm, and mediates harms or disputes in a restorative way. This initiative organizes and facilitates conversations—in the form of talking circles, community conferences, harm and/or healing circles—to ensure that all of us are heard when we harm or are harmed--or are simply in need of third party facilitation.
