College Governance & Organization
At Haverford, we believe in a transparent and participatory community processes. Collaboration, openness, and a respect for the opinions of all members of the Haverford community characterize our governance structures and processes. Many of our customs, such as consensus decision-making, are rooted in Quaker practice.
Our commitment to shared governance provides a significant role and voice for Haverford's various constituencies. Faculty, students, and staff work collaboratively on matters of institutional governance and community interest, often in consultation with the Corporation, Board of Managers, and alumni as well.

The Corporation of Haverford College
The Corporation holds legal title to the College assets and elects members of the Board of Managers, to which it entrusts fiduciary and strategic oversight of the College.

Board of Managers
The Board of Managers is responsible for general oversight of Haverford College. In practice the Board delegates operational and management functions to the President and administration, and implementation of the academic program to the faculty.

President of the College
The President of the College is the chief executive officer and the educational leader of the College.

Divisional Structure & Senior Staff
Haverford's academic and administrative operations are organized into nine functional areas. The head of each division along with the President and Chief of Staff compose the senior staff, which serves as the President's cabinet and sets administrative policies and priorities for the College.

Cross-Functional Councils
Bi-College Steering Committee
The Bi-College Steering Committee has responsibility for setting the strategic direction of the Bi-Co, approving new Bi-Co initiatives, and supporting the implementation of such initiatives on each campus.
The Bi-College Steering Committee is jointly chaired by the Presidents of Bryn Mawr and Haverford Colleges.
Civic Engagement and Social Responsibility Council
The Civic Engagement and Social Responsibility (CESR) Council is a body of representatives which collaborates to articulate a cohesive story of Civic Engagement and Social Responsibility at Haverford College. The Council offers recommendations and significant support for ethical campus-community engagement. The CESR Council was established in 2017, as one of three primary recommendations made in the Blueprint for Civic Engagement and Social Responsibility.
CESR is chaired by the Associate Director of the Center for Peace and Global Citizenship, and reports to the Provost and Dean of the College.
College Space Planning Executive Committee (CSPEC)
The purpose of the College Space Planning Executive Committee is to develop clear institutional priorities for projects involving space planning with ties to programming functions, and facilities and technology support. CSPEC assembles appropriate groups of community members to set priorities in space programming and renovations, and establishes Project Teams for the development and review of specific initiatives.
CSPEC is chaired by the Vice President for Finance and Chief Administrative Officer and reports to the President.
Council on Sustainability and Social Responsibility (CSSR)
The Council on Sustainability and Social Responsibility is charged with advancing the study and practice of sustainability at Haverford, marked by commitments to environmental stewardship and social responsibility within the context of the College’s Quaker values and educational mission.
CSSR is chaired by the Chief Sustainability Officer and reports to the President.
Data Stewardship Council (DSC)
The DSC is a college-wide steering group charged with examining data-related questions and issues from an institutional perspective. The DSC will utilize working groups to define and steward data standards, contribute to data storage and tool selections, facilitate data flows and coordination across the college, and advise on institutional data strategies, priorities, and policies.
The DSC is co-chaired by the Chief Information Officer and Vice President/Chief of Staff, and reports to the President.
Institutional Effectiveness Committee (IEC)
The function of the Institutional Effectiveness Committee, established in 2010, is to take an institutional view of assessment at the College; to integrate, support, and share on-going activities; and to identify and develop initiatives to help the College meet its near- and long-term institutional goals (as articulated by the President and Senior Staff).
The IEC is chaired by the Associate Provost for Curricular Development and Support and reports to the President.
Records Management Advisory Group (RMAG)
The Records Management Advisory Group (RMAG) is a broadly representative body tasked by the Library (as representative of the Office of the Provost) and the Office of Finance and Administration to advise, assist, and support the development and maintenance of a comprehensive records management program at Haverford College.
The role of RMAG is:
- Provide guidance to the College Archivist/Records Manager;
- Promote institutional support for records management programs and activities; and
- Support and advocate records management throughout the campus community
The RMAG is chaired by the College Archivist/Records Manager. Existing policy evaluations and any recommended policy changes will be vetted by general council and approved by senior staff.
Strategic Planning Steering Committee
The Strategic Planning Steering Committee will engage the best thinking of the Haverford College community to develop and propose a strategic plan to the campus community and Board of Managers.
The Steering Committee is chaired by the President.
Travel Council
The Travel Council will carefully weigh risks and liabilities against the benefits and educational value of travel. The Council will maintain an inventory of sponsored off-campus experiences, examine and regularly review current travel practices, and make decisions regarding policies and procedures for employees and students who are traveling domestically or internationally for College business or College sponsored programs. In situations deemed of potentially high risk, the Council will participate in the approval process with relevant College personnel.
The Travel Council is chaired by the Provost and reports to the President.
Working Group on Benefits (WGB)
The Working Group on Benefits provides a forum to review the employee benefits program and ensure consistency with established Haverford principles. The working group periodically examines all College benefit plans, as well as the range of programs and specific design criteria, and discusses financial dimensions of the various programs along with the Administrative Advisory Committee (AAC) and the Finance Committee of the Board of Managers.
The Working Group on Benefits is chaired by the Vice President for Finance and Chief Administrative Officer and reports to the President.

Faculty Committees and Administrative Assignments
The faculty oversee and implement the College's academic program. Through various committee and administrative assignments, the faculty are active partners in shared institutional governance.

Students' Council
Students' Council is an elected body that advocates on behalf of students, serves as representatives to the Board of Managers, appoints students to all major committees at the College, and distributes the activities budget to all student clubs and groups.

Staff Association
The Staff Association provides an opportunity for the staff to share information and ideas pertaining to campus business and social life.
