Department ofPhysics and Astronomy
Study Abroad as a Physics, Astronomy or Astrophysics Major
Many Physics, Astronomy or Astrophysics Majors enjoy participating in study abroad programs, and we encourage students to do so if it appeals to them.
We keep a record of recent experiences (accessible to Haverford accounts only) from majors in our department, along with a list of classes and their Haverford equivalents.
After you return from Study Abroad, please fill out the Physics and Astronomy Department Return from Study Abroad Form with details of the classes you took.
What classes should I take while abroad?
Students study abroad with a variety of goals in mind. Not all students want/need to take Physics/Astro classes abroad, and that is usually fine (if planned out in advanced). The important thing it to make sure you have mapped out your options for finishing your major before you go abroad.
- If you want to take Physics/Astro classes abroad you will need to work with your Major Advisor to find the right equivalents. When you return you will fill out a form for our records.
We keep a record of recent experiences from majors in our department, which includes a list of classes and what have previously been counted as their Haverford equivalents. - If you choose to take distribution requirements when you are abroad, it’s really important that you work with your Major Advisor to return with a plan of how to fit any remaining requirements into your remaining semesters at Haverford. For most majors this is possible, however “Sophomore start” majors may not be able to take this route.
After you return from Study Abroad, please fill out the Physics and Astronomy Department Return from Study Abroad Form with details of the classes you took.
Who should I meet with to discuss study abroad?
For general information, meet with the Office of International Academic Programs.
Within Physics/Astronomy, your Major Advisor is the best resource for discussing how study abroad plans mesh with your major. If you don’t yet have a major advisor, sort that out first before discussing study abroad.
I am getting ready to study abroad soon. What should I do?
Email the department chair and your major advisor a list of courses that you are planning to take. (This may change once you arrive! Feel free to send an updated list.)
Make sure to save all of your course paperwork, including syllabi, assignments, exams, papers, or written projects in case we need it to assess Haverford equivalents to courses you take abroad.
Meet with the Study Abroad Office to complete your pre-departure checklists.
