Haverford College’s Antiracism Accountability and Advancement Group Announces Members
Details
The Board of Managers established this new group at the end of 2020 to independently review the College’s progress in racial equity goals, and the inaugural members have now been selected.
Haverford College is pleased to announce the inaugural 14 members of its Antiracism Accountability and Advancement Group (AAAG). The group, which was chartered by the Board of Managers at the end of 2020 to independently review and verify progress in racial equity goals and commitments, includes two current students chosen by Students' Council, two faculty members chosen by Academic Council, and two staff members selected by the Staff Association Executive Committee; four members of the Board and four external experts were chosen by the Board’s Nominations and Governance Committee.
The members of this new group are:
- Jasper Barbash-Taylor '22
- Jalen Martin '23
- Ben Le, professor of psychology
- Asali Solomon, associate professor and chair of English and director of creative writing
- Brian Cuzzolina, director of the Office of Academic Resources and associate dean for student academic success and persistence
- Kevin Iglesias, associate director of institutional research
- Jerry Williams '73, manager
- David Wertheimer '77, manager
- Charley Beever '72, chair, Board of Managers (ex officio)
- Garry Jenkins '92, vice chair, Board of Managers (ex officio)
- Candace Dodson-Reed, chief of staff to the president and executive director, Office of Equity and Inclusion at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County
- Anita Foeman, professor of communication and media at West Chester University
- Maurice Hall, dean of the School of the Arts and Communication at The College of New Jersey
- Gregory Vincent, professor of educational policy studies and evaluation at the University of Kentucky College of Education
These members will serve AAAG for a two-year term that is renewable at the discretion of the representatives of each constituency.
“The Board is looking forward to the work the AAAG will do to independently review and report on the progress Haverford is making in meeting racial equity goals and commitments,” said Board Chair Charley Beever '72.
AAAG is staffed by Interim Co-Chief Diversity Officer Raquel Esteves-Joyce. Upon completion of her interim term (likely this summer), it will be staffed by the continuing CDO once that roll is filled.
The group will now select its own leadership approach, determine how it will be run, and schedule its meetings in support of its work. That work includes formal reviews, assessments, and providing assistance in accelerating the College’s on-going racial equity work. One of AAAG’s first projects will be gathering and synthesizing assessment data related to antiracism work, with input from all campus constituencies, and documenting its findings and recommendations in a written report to the Board of Managers that will be made publicly available by June 30.
The meeting of this new group begins the week of March 13.
