Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC)
Haverford’s Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) is charged to ensure that Haverford cares for and uses live, vertebrate animals according to policy mandated by the Public Health Service.
Haverford College requires that, prior to initiation, all research and instructional activities using such animals be reviewed and approved by IACUC. The documents that guide IACUC's deliberations and detail IACUC's responsibilities are described on our information page.
Committee Members
Chair: Karl Johnson
Veterinarian: Joanna Fried/Blythe Philips
Faculty Reps (scientist): Roshan Jain
Faculty Reps (non-scientist): Richard Ball
Non-Affiliated Member: Rob Wozniak
Protocol Submission
A protocol review form may be downloaded from the instruction page where IACUC addresses preliminary questions asked by faculty who wish to use animals. All submissions of IACUC proposals should be emailed to the kjohnson [at] haverford.edu (IACUC chair). IACUC may determine that modifications are required to secure approval. Upon receipt of a letter from the IACUC chair that specifies the required modifications, the proposer may submit a revised protocol. If the revised protocol makes the required modifications, the proposer is notified in writing that it has been approved.
Animal Welfare Concerns
IACUC reviews all concerns involving the care and use of animals at Haverford. Please contact lstronglee [at] haverford.edu (the Provost), jhfried [at] gmail.com (veterinarian) or rcompton [at] haverford.edu (IACUC chair). Confidentiality will be maintained, if requested, to the extent allowable by law. Anonymous concerns may be communicated to the institutional official (IO) who bears ultimate responsibility for Haverford's animal care and use program, hwhite [at] haverford.edu (Associate Provost Helen White). Employees who report concerns are protected by the Pennsylvania Whistleblower Law.
