Then & Now: The Viewbook

In the 1930s, Haverford's admission viewbook was little more than a bound set of postcards illustrating the college experience. By the 1970s (as shown in the viewbook pictured left) hundreds of words did the talking.

The energetic design of the new viewbook (right) spotlights student agency, and unpacks today’s Haverford by portraying the lives and work of four specific students.

The viewbook also contains contributed (and attributed) observations—whether through words or, in a nod to our image-rich culture, through student-generated photos of campus life.

History Lesson: Seminar on Historical Evidence

Considered pioneering when it was created, a history class called “Seminar on Historical Evidence” was unparalleled in exposing majors to hands-on work in historical research. This approach has since been incorporated into the senior thesis process.

A series of photos taken in 2002 of students with their “Seminar on Historical Evidence” mystery artifact included Rebecca Harris '03, holding a 19th-century pocket watch shipping tin, and Arunabh Ghosh '03, holding a cheek block that was used to control the rigging and sails on a small sailing vessel.

Cool Classes - “Revolutions in Neuroscience”

“Revolutions in Neuroscience”

Taught by Assistant Professor of Psychology Laura Been and Visiting Assistant Professor of Psychology Mary Ellen Kelly, this survey of revolutionary developments in neuroscience included class visits by current leaders in the field and student trips to the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia to visit the most complex piece of brain art in the world.

Our Cool Classes blog series highlights interesting, unusual, and unique courses that enrich the Haverford College experience.
