Office Hour – Lou Charkoudian '03

Assistant Professor of Chemistry Lou Charkoudian '03 has lots of books in her office, but two have particular significance: the chemistry textbooks she used when she was a Haverford student in the organic chemistry classes of professors Karin Åkerfeldt and Fran Blase, who are now Charkoudian’s colleagues.

Read Office Hour in the Spring/Summer 2017 issue of Haverford Magazine.

Dorm Olympics

Part of Customs, Dorm Olympics is the beloved annual tradition in which the blue Barclay residents, red South campus dwellers from HCA and Tritton, and green Gummere inhabitants compete against one another in demonstrations of unusual abilities and dorm pride.

Visual Studies Minor

Starting this semester, students can declare a minor in visual studies, which aims to create a dynamic model for critical and creative engagement with visual experience across media, time, and cultures.  The minor is supported by the renovation of the Old Gym into the VCAM facility

International Students

An increasing number of international students are being drawn to Haverford by the promise of intellectual exploration, academic rigor, and close-knit community. Once here, they must also contend with unfamiliar food and strange American social customs, and a climate that may be way outside their comfort zone. A robust support program for students from abroad eases intercultural adjustment.

Then & Now: Magill Library Now

Magill Library

Magill Library will be transformed by a renovation and revitalization that is scheduled to begin in January, 2018. The building will be renamed Lutnick Library in recognition of a $25 million lead gift from Howard Lutnick '83. Planned changes include enhanced technology, open and flexible spaces, increased accessibility for special collections, and a café. Heritage spaces, including the Magill Wing and its historic façade on Founders Green, will be preserved.
