Then & Now: The Skate House Now

Then & Now: The Skate House

The Skate House hasn’t seen any actual skaters for decades. But it’s still in use, booked for receptions and student events such as club meetings and even poetry readings.

Missed yesterday’s photo? See the Skate House back “Then“.

The Skate House, pictured here in 2008, was altered from its original design after a 1979 fire.

Then & Now: The Skate House

Then & Now: The Skate House

The Skate House, designed in 1949, is outfitted with a porch, two fireplaces and a sitting room with benches. It regularly played host to crowds of skaters back in the days when the Duck Pond could be counted on to freeze solid in winter.

Come back tomorrow to see the Skate House “Now”.

Studying Historical "Madness"

History is essential to a free and enlightened citizenry and forms a cornerstone of the liberal arts education at Haverford College. Our varied curriculum encourages students to analyze and interpret the past from many different perspectives and to recognize their own role in writing “history.”

Student Life

Haverford students are afforded a large amount of autonomy and may use this opportunity to craft the kinds of experiences they wish to have—and they are given the responsibility, the resources and the respect necessary for that to happen.

Lives That Speak: Beverly Ortega-Babers '84

“Three thousand dollars wasn’t enough to cover a Haverford tuition, but that’s what we could pay, and that’s what we did pay. To think that I was able to get that kind of degree in those circumstances... it’s amazing.” –Beverly Ortega-Babers '84, member of the first class of women at Haverford and chief administrative officer of the U.S. Mint.

Beverly is the first in a series of individual vignettes directed by Ben Hickernell ’00 that take us further into the lives of Haverfordians profiled in the documentary "Lives That Speak".

From Doctor to Artist: David Fraser '65

The former president of Swarthmore College and renowned epidemiologist known for leading teams that unraveled Legionnaires’ disease and toxic shock syndrome, Haverford biology major David Fraser '65 has approached his late-in-life art career with the same zeal and curiosity he employed as a scientist and physician.

Thank a Donor Day

The average financial aid grant awarded to Haverford students is $40,014, and more than 50% of students receive some form of financial aid from the College. On National Philanthropy Day (Nov. 12), students were invited to write thank you notes to alumni who have contributed to the Annual Fund this year.
