John P. Chesick Scholars Program forFirst-Generation/Low-Income Students
For Juniors and Seniors
Starting their Junior year, Chesick scholars are invited to participate in Chesick Launch, which is a range of workshops, events and opportunities focused on career and professional development for first-generation college students and/or students who come from low-income (FLI) backgrounds.
Chesick Launch Family Dinners
Chesick Juniors and Seniors are invited to join us for dinner every second Tuesday of the month. We invite folks from offices around campus to share information, resources and events that prepare students for life after Haverford. This is also a great opportunity for students to meet up with friends and catch up with each other over dinner!
Graduate School Mini Series
The graduate school application process and experience is broken down into a series of workshops focusing on the difference between graduate school and professional school, learning how to start the search and application process and budgeting for incurring fees during the application process and throughout graduate school.
Adulting 101 Workshops
Session topics focus on navigating important milestones each of us experience as we become older such as understanding health insurance, credit scores and credit cards, job benefits and more. Students are provided with informational handouts and resources pertaining to the topic as well as encouraged to connect with our Associate Director for guidance and support.
Food for Thought Mini Series
Each semester we invite Haverford’s Registered Dietician to connect with our students and go over tips and information about nutrition, how to prepare and cook vegetables and tips on shopping with a budget.
The Wardrobe
Chesick students have access to The Wardrobe which is a stable source of well-maintained and displayed clothing that is suitable for any need, from casual to workwear. We host field trips in groups of 10 or less throughout the year to allow students the opportunity to experience one-on-one support from The Wardrobe staff and peruse through items that suit their needs.
Through our membership, Chesick students may request to schedule an appointment, request a Wardrobe pass and/or a Wardrobe Box!
Chesick Summer Experience Fund
In our effort to ensure that Chesick scholars can successfully participate and complete a summer experience related to their professional goals and aspirations, first-years, sophomores and juniors are highly encouraged to apply to our Chesick Summer Experience Fund.
The Chesick Summer Experience Fund offers scholars the opportunity to engage in an unpaid or underpaid summer experience related to the student’s academic and/or career interests. Past summer experiences include conducting independent literary or scientific research, working at a non-profit organization offering social services, serving the community by working with your local district’s assemblywoman and more! Scholars are awarded a taxable stipend of up to $4,600. Applications for Summer 2024 will open Monday March 25th!
