CET Beijing: Intensive Language

Introduction
Beijing, the monumental capital of modern China, is a magnet for international investment. It is a city that strives to preserve the cultural landscape of its glorious past while all around the glass and steel emblems of its dynamic present flourish. CET is located on the campus of Capital Normal University.

Required. Non-US citizens should consult with CET and the Office of International Student Support before applying to the program.
Additional Visa Information - Fees: Students pay Haverford tuition Haverford College. Haverford will then be responsible for submitting payments to the program. Students pay housing costs directly to CET.
Academic Overview
Requirements
Previous Chinese language study is not required. Students must enroll in an appropriate-level Chinese language course.
Strong Mandarin Chinese language program (includes one-on-one language tutorials, supplementary classes for each level, language practical & ethnographic projects). Full-time Chinese language pledge required.
Academic Credit
In the fall and spring, students take 20 class hours per week of Chinese language instruction. Fulfills Haverford’s language requirement. Transfer credit will only be granted for courses in which students receive a grade of a C (2.0) or above.
Curriculum
Students take one intensive course which teaches the four main language skills: reading, writing, speaking and listening. Supplementary classes such as one-on-one language tutorials, one-on-two drills, television and writing. Elective classes such as newspaper, business or literature. Each week a portion of class time is devoted to preparing relevant vocabulary and background material for that weekend’s activity or excursion. Some students participate in language “practica”, wherein they practice their Chinese outside the classroom. Class attendance is mandatory.

Non-Academic Overview
Orientation
A typical orientation program includes a campus tour, placements tests, group meals, sightseeing trips, a neighborhood tour, meeting Chinese roommates, a scavenger hunt, barbecue, and an academic orientation meeting.
Number of Students
Over 31,000 students study at the Capital Normal University. Approximately 60-80 CET students each semester.
Housing/Meal Plans
Double rooms available in dormitories at the Capital Normal University. You share a furnished room with a local roommate.
Haverford students may not opt for housing not arranged by the program.

Freeman Awards for Study in Asia (Freeman-ASIA) provides scholarships for U.S. undergraduate students with demonstrated financial need to study abroad in East or Southeast Asia.
