Visiting Instructor in Japanese
Haverford College seeks a Visiting Instructor in Japanese.
Haverford College invites applications for a full-time Visiting Instructor position in the Japanese Language Program in the Bi-College Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures (joint program with Bryn Mawr College), to begin in the Fall semester of 2025. This is a one-year position with the possibility of renewal, depending on staffing needs, funding, and positive evaluations.
The Bi-College Japanese Language Program offers four levels of language instruction for Haverford College and Bryn Mawr College students. The ideal candidate will demonstrate a commitment to engaging a diverse student body and creating an inclusive classroom environment in a liberal arts context. The successful candidate will teach courses collaboratively and independently, develop online learning/testing resources, and engage in program-related activities/tasks, which vary depending on immediate needs. Preference will be given to candidates who have taught Japanese in a liberal arts college setting, especially those familiar with the textbooks “Genki” (The Japan Times) and “Tobira” (Kurosio Publishers). Also desirable are: full professional proficiency in both English and Japanese; competence in developing teaching materials; successful experience in team-teaching; advanced computer skills; and the ability to teach an Advanced Japanese course. The topics of such a course might include literature, classical Japanese, translation, science/technology-related topics, and/or social justice and civic engagement.
The position begins July 1, 2025, with classes for the fall semester beginning on Tuesday September 2 and it is expected that the M.A. or Ph.D. in Japanese or a related field will be completed prior to the start date (but ABD candidates will be considered).
All application materials should be submitted via Interfolio (http://apply.interfolio.com/157864), and should articulate how the candidate will contribute to the College’s commitment to diversity, especially through inclusive teaching practices.
Applications should include:
1) A cover letter stating an interest in the position. Please prepare a teaching demo video (50-60 minutes) to be shared online and indicate the link in the cover letter.
2) A curriculum vitae.
3) One sample course syllabus in an introductory-level Japanese course and another one in an intermediate- or advanced-level course.
4) A sample of recently developed learning/testing materials/websites (2-3 pages).
5) Sample course evaluations (1-2 pages).
6) A statement of teaching philosophy and professional goals (1-2 pages).
7) Applicants should arrange for two confidential letters of recommendation to be submitted directly by the recommenders via Interfolio.
Review of applications will begin starting February 1, 2025, and continue until the position is filled. Questions about the application process should be directed to Karla Alfaro-Urias (kalfarou [at] haverford.edu).
