Professor Erin Schoneveld Named Division III FARA Newcomer of the Year

Associate Professor of East Asian Languages and Cultures and Visual Studies Erin Schoneveld has been named the 2024 NCAA Division III Faculty Athletic Representative Association (FARA) Newcomer of the Year, the organization announced at its annual meeting on Thursday evening in Frisco, Texas.

"What an honor to receive the FARA Newcomer of the Year award," Schoneveld says. "Athletics is such a crucial part of a liberal arts education, and it's a privilege to serve as the Faculty Athletics Representative at Haverford. I have immense admiration and respect for our student-athletes and coaches, and I truly value the opportunity to work with them in our shared pursuit of academic and athletic excellence. As FAR, I will continue to support every Haverford student—whether through participation in intercollegiate varsity sports, competitive club teams, or intramural programs—as they enrich their lives through sports, fitness, and wellness to become the best versions of themselves."

The Faculty Athletics Representative (FAR) plays a vital role in balancing academics and athletics within institutions, emphasizing academic integrity and the welfare of student-athletes. FARs are expected to stay informed about best practices, NCAA regulations, and emerging challenges to fulfill their responsibilities effectively. Additionally, FARs advocate for student-athlete welfare and voice institutional concerns on significant issues in collegiate sports.

Schoneveld, a two-time national championship rower and alumna of Brown University, was inducted into the Brown University Athletics Hall of Fame as part of the Class of 2022 alongside her two championship teams.
