“I am very happy to hear that I received the award,” she said. “I would like to thank my colleagues and my department for their support for the statistics program. I am excited for the statistics program to grow even more in the coming years.”
Miao was recognized for her teaching at Haverford, where she has been a member of the faculty since 2007, and for establishing the College’s statistics program. The statistics minor, which she helped start in 2013, graduated just two students in its first year but has grown to be one of the top 10 most popular minors on campus.
Miao’s research interests include legal statistics and nonparametric statistics. In 2021, she was chosen to be an ASA fellow, an over-100-year-old prestigious distinction for her notable contributions to statistical education and the application of statistical methodology in the law.
