Q&A with Joanne Brown, Manager of Science Laboratories and Materials
What do you do in the KINSC?
I am the Manager of Science Laboratories and Materials. I oversee the management of KINSC lab supplies, including sourcing, ordering, receiving and distributing all chemicals, consumables and equipment. I also manage department, grant and faculty startup budgets. My office is on the second floor Link Room 207, but you can also find me in the chemistry stockroom, or the loading dock.
How long have you worked at Haverford College?
17 years
What did you do before you came to Haverford?
I was the Lab Supply Coordinator for the Biology Department at St. Joseph’s University for 11 years.
What would you say is the best part of your job?
The best part of my job is the people. The KINSC faculty and staff are an incredibly talented, enthusiastic, interesting and fun group of people. The students are similarly amazing; they are dedicated, smart and hardworking. I also serve on various college committees, and I enjoy interacting with faculty and staff across the campus.
Where's your favorite place in the KINSC?
My favorite place in the KINSC is my office. There is more foot traffic outside my door than my old third floor office, so I see many friendly faces every day. I also have fun trinkets and swag in my office that remind me of conferences I have attended. In addition, my plants seem to thrive in the sunny window.
Tell us something about you we probably don't know.
I love doing word and number puzzles. My mom got me started on crossword puzzles and cryptograms when I was young, and Boggle was one of my favorite games as a child. Sudoku has become an obsession for me. I even won first prize at a “hard level” Sudoku contest on a cruise back in 2007. The prize? A Royal Caribbean baseball hat!
