Summer Centered: Bilge Yilmaz '21

Bilge Yilmaz '21, a prospective political science major and music and visual studies double minor, is working for La Blogothèque, a French broadcast and production company.

"I experience a very unique working environment where everyone is immensely passionate about what they do—they communicate and brainstorm so intricately and so naturally that I can now understand how the magic happens,” Yilmaz said. “I hope to learn from these work ethics and collaboration skills."

Yilmaz's internship is supported by the Smart Family Fund and the Center for Career and Professional Advising. "Summer Centered" is a series exploring our students' Center-funded summer work.

Ford Games - Conversation With a Coach

Sean Sloane—who retired after 21 years helming the men’s tennis team and both the women’s and men’s squash squads—has the accolades to back up his legendary status as an all-time great Haverford coach: a 214-144 all-time record with men’s tennis, 151 squash victories, all but one Centennial Conference Tournament appearance in the past 13 years, and two Middle States Coach of the Year awards from the U.S. Professional Tennis Association.

What They Learned: Caleb Mayer '18

Not every undergraduate has their independent research funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF), but Caleb Mayer '18 is one of the select few. The mathematics major and psychology minor spent a summer studying mathematical models for how different types of cancer cells respond to various treatments, thanks to the NSF's Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program. When it came time to design a senior thesis project, he knew he wanted to do something similarly interdisciplinary, building on his cancer cell models.

"What They Learned" is a blog series exploring the thesis work of recent graduates.

Moved to Run

Haverford alumni are stepping up as first-time political candidates, boldly challenging longtime incumbents and the political “machine” in their communities. For all, the decision to seek office is an effort to live their values.

Summer Centered: Claire Burdick ’19

Claire Burdick ’19, a psychology major concentrating in peace, justice, and human rights, is interning at the St. Louis Zoo this summer.

"This internship will help me achieve my future goals because it is giving me a taste of what doing animal behavior research for a job is really like,” Burdick says, “and is going to help me build the foundation of skills I'll need if I end up working in the animal-behavior field.”

Burdick will intern at the St. Louis Zoo thanks to the Center for Career and Professional Advising’s Liberal Arts in the Workplace grants. "Summer Centered" is a series exploring our students' Center-funded summer work.
