Physics and Astronomy

Anticipating that this year's Nobel prize in physics would go to scientists studying gravity waves, Professor Andrea Lommen and students in her gravitational waves class organized a presentation about the physics of the waves, the remarkable facilities needed to detect them, and the importance of these observations.

Office Hour – Roshan Jain

Assistant Professor of Biology Roshan Jain’s research focuses on how genes control behavior, using zebrafish to ask and answer questions about decision making, learning, and memory.

Read Office Hour in the Special issue of Haverford Magazine.

Office Hour – Lou Charkoudian '03

Assistant Professor of Chemistry Lou Charkoudian '03 has lots of books in her office, but two have particular significance: the chemistry textbooks she used when she was a Haverford student in the organic chemistry classes of professors Karin Åkerfeldt and Fran Blase, who are now Charkoudian’s colleagues.

Kristen Whalen Earns NSF Award

The assistant professor of biology was awarded $356,028 as part of a larger collaborative grant to fund her work exploring why certain "infochemicals" in the ocean cause phytoplankton death. This summer, Whalen is in Norway conducting field work with her student Anna Schrecengost '18 at the Norwegian National Mesocosm Centre at the Espegrend Marine Biological Station to understand how a bacterial molecule, or "infochemical," she identified—known as HHQ—influences the dynamics of natural communities of bacteria and phytoplankton.

Music at Haverford

The Department of Music at Haverford offers a creative approach to music theory, a curriculum in music history that deals with music in the social context and embraces world music and jazz, while our applied music program and ensembles provide students with opportunities for performances and tours.

Over winter break the Bi-College Chamber Singers embarked on a cultural exchange tour of Germany to perform with local choirs, including one featuring Middle Eastern refugee singers. Photo by Jessica Eucker.
