The Campus

Our campus has 200 acres of award-winning architecture and landscaping; more than 50 academic, athletic, and residential buildings; and a nationally recognized arboretum with 400 species of trees and shrubs, a 3.5-acre duck pond, gardens, and wooded areas.

Our arboretum renewal program includes planting trees, such as these saplings, along the Nature Trail. The goal is to help restore the natural four-layer structure of the Eastern Deciduous Forest, which includes large canopy and understory species. Photo: Patrick Montero.

Then & Now: Machine Shop Now

Machine Shop

The Maker Arts Space in VCAM is the modern-day variant on a machine shop, housing an array of high-tech devices, such as a 3D printer, a laser cutter, and a 3D scanner, as well as lots of design software.

Then & Now: Machine Shop

Machine Shop

The circa-1925 machine shop in long-gone Whitall Hall was a prime teaching tool for the engineering program of the time. According to the 1925 course catalog, there were woodworking and metalworking shops, a drafting room, and a materials laboratory for the testing of boilers, engines, air compressors, and the like.

Haverford House

The Center for Peace and Global Citizenship has named its 2019–2020 Haverford House Fellows. These six seniors, who were chosen for this fellowship for their commitment to social justice and community action, will spend next year working at Philadelphia nonprofits and strengthening connections between the College and the city.

Sustainability

As a core institutional principle, sustainability animates ​Haverford's broad mission of stewarding ​its​ financial, ethical, and curricular endowments in the interest of educating principled global citizens while safeguarding intergenerational equity as a perpetual institution.

The College, which pledged to devote at least 20% of its dining budget to local, ethically sourced food (like these tomatoes grown on campus at the Haverfarm) by 2020 following a 2016 Plenary resolution, surpassed that ambition 10 months ahead of schedule. Photo: Patrick Montero.

Haverford Innovations Program

The Haverford Innovations Program (HIP) encourages and supports creative and strategic thinking around a problem, a need, a question, or simply an interest. The goal is to find new solutions and opportunities for entrepreneurial projects and paths of learning.

For the second year in a row a team of Fords was named the winner of the Tri-Co Hackathon by a panel of faculty and industry judges. The winning team, called Gradual—from top left: Bella Muno '21, Ziyao (Claire) Wang '20, Blien Habtu '21, Jason Ngo '21, and Iryna Khovryak '22—made a website that students can use to map their major requirements and ensure that they are on track to graduate. Traditions

Fords enjoy myriad traditional events such as the annual Lloyd Lights decorating competition; Pinwheel Day; the annual weekend throwdown at the end of the year called Haverfest; and, most importantly, Fall and Spring Plenary.
