Award-winning filmmaker and cinematographer PJ Raval presented his powerful documentary about the Filipina women who galvanize a nation, seeking justice for Jennifer Laude, a trans woman brutally murdered by a U.S. Marine.
March 20, 2023 Film Screening plus Q & A with Director
Queer and Trans Filipinx American Visual Culture series presented by the Programs in Gender and Sexuality at Haverford College and Swarthmore College a screening of Call Her Ganda (2018), at Haverford College's VCAM Building. This film by PJ Raval, award winning filmmaker and cinematographer is a powerful documentary about the Filipina women who galvanize a nation, seeking justice for Jennifer Laude, a trans woman brutally murdered by a U.S. Marine.
March 21, 2023 Student Mixer & Panel Discussion:
Students, faculty, staff, and community members were invited to enjoy some light refreshments and meet film director PJ Raval before the panel discussion.
A Hybrid panel discussion was brought together and hosted by filmmakers PJ Raval (Call Her Ganda) and Isabel Sandoval (Lingua Franca) with scholars Martin Manalansan (University of Minnesota), Ryan Ku (Swarthmore), and Gina Velasco (Haverford) to situate these films within Filipinx American and Asian American culture and social movements. More broadly, they considered the trajectory of queer and trans studies within the fields of Filipinx American and Asian American studies.
Presented by Haverford Gender and Sexuality Studies with support from the Doris Stevens Fund. Co-sponsored by the Hurford Center for the Humanities, Visual Studies, Tri College Asian American Studies Program, Distinguished Visitors Program, and the Gender and Sexuality Studies Programs at Bryn Mawr and Swarthmore Colleges.
