US Ambassador to Ecuador Art Brown is a career member of the Senior Foreign Service with the rank of Minister-Counselor. Previously, Brown was detailed to the Department of State as (DCM) at the U.S. Embassy in Harare, Zimbabwe from 2021-2022. He was the USAID Mission Director in Zimbabwe from 2020-2021. Prior to that, Brown was USAID Mission Director in the Dominican Republic from 2016-2020, twenty months of which he was on detail as (DCM) at the U.S. Embassy in Santo Domingo. He has devoted much of his career, spanning over 30 years, to service in Africa, Southwest Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean regions.
Brown served as USAID Mission Director in Managua, Nicaragua from 2012-2015. Additionally, Brown has served in Kabul, Afghanistan and in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of the Congo as USAID Deputy Mission Director. Over the years, Brown had assignments in Botswana, Guinea, Nigeria, and worked on regional support activities in Sierra Leone, Haiti, Jamaica, Barbados, and Namibia.
Brown has an MBA degree from Johns Hopkins University, a BA degree from the University of Virginia, and a MS degree in National Security Strategy from the National War College. Additionally, he is a National Defense University (NDU) CAPSTONE Fellow, and Mr. Brown completed the Joint Special Operations University (JSOU)’s-Combined/Joint Force Special Operations Component Commander Course (C/JFSOCC).
Art Brown is the recipient of numerous USAID performance awards, the Administrator’s Management Improvement Award, and a Distinguished Honor Award for his service as DCM. Prior to joining the U.S. Foreign Service, Brown worked for Johns Hopkins University on international maternal and child health programs. He is a recipient of the Franklin H. Williams award for Outstanding Community Leaders. Mr. Brown has volunteered in a variety of civic and charitable organizations including the Women Infants and Children (WIC) welfare program and the Washington Free Clinic in Washington, DC.
Brown is married to a Department of State Foreign Service Medical Provider (Family Nurse Practitioner) Krista Brown, who is a Returned Peace Corps Volunteer (Togo), West Africa where they met. They have a son and daughter together. Mr. Brown served as a Rural Community Development Extension Agent in the Republic of Bénin, West Africa, Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs where he was a Peace Corps Volunteer for over three years.
