This course was inspired and supported by the Henry Luce Foundation’s Grant for the Initiative on Asian Studies and the Environment (LIASE), which seeks to encourage innovative and interdisciplinary approaches to teaching and learning about Asia and the environment.

A Taste of Japan: Food in Japanese Cinema invites you to experience contemporary Japanese cinema through the lens of food. The series features three films that portray the integral role of food and farming in Japanese culture: A Drop of the Grapevine (Dir. Mishima Yukiko, 2014), Silver Spoon (Dir. Yoshida Keisuke, 2014), and Sweet Bean (Dir. Kawase Naomi, 2015).

Students in Professor Shiamin Kwa’s (Bryn Mawr) class EALC 355 “Animals, Vegetables, Minerals: Art and Environment in East Asian Literature and Film” went downtown to watch the opening of Cai Guo-Qiang’s art event, “Fireflies,” which was commissioned to celebrate the 100th birthday of the Benjamin Franklin Parkway. The event tied in to class readings and discussions about questions of time and scale and its relation to Cai’s artwork, which included a screening of the documentary “Sky Ladder.”
