At a Magill Library open-house event this week, Haverford's new first-year students got a glimpse of some of the treasures held by Special Collections. Among them: a Buddha Scroll from the Ming Dynasty, a deed signed by William Penn and (pictured) the first of the Four Folios of Shakespeare's plays, a rare and beautiful volume that dates to 1623.
The library display, which included materials from the Quaker Collection, the Rare Books and Manuscripts Collections, the College Archives, and the Fine Arts Collection, remained on view in the Special Collections Reading Room the following day for others in the Haverford community to visit. Also included in the exhibit were letters written by Virginia Woolf and Albert Einstein, the amusingly illustrated chemistry notebook artist Maxfield Parrish kept while he was a student at Haverford, a rare edition of Audubon's The Quadrupeds of North America and a lithograph by Wassily Kandinsky.
