The grant will allow Frasat Ahmad, Michele Buonora, and Emilyn Sosa, all Class of '11, to study abroad during the spring semester.
Three Haverford juniors will be studying abroad during the spring semester courtesy of their newly awarded Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarships. Sponsored by the U.S. State Department, the Gilman International Scholarship Program offers grants up to $5,000 for undergraduate students to pursue academic studies abroad.
Frasat Ahmad '11, a religion major, will be studying Arabic, religion, and Middle Eastern politics at the American University in Cairo, Egypt next semester.“Specifically, I will be focusing on advancing my knowledge of the Arabic language and colloquial Egyptian Arabic, as well as gaining an international insight on the ethics, politics, and culture of religions in the Middle East,” he says.
Michele Buonora '11 will attend University College London in the United Kingdom, where she'll study biology and psychology.“It's very exciting to win a Gilman Scholarship,” says Buonora, a psychology major with a concentration in neural and behavioral sciences.“I also hope to be able to take a class in London Renaissance art or London cultural history, in order to fulfill distributive credit and to learn more about where I will be staying.”
Emilyn Sosa '11, a sociology major and education minor, will take classes related to her interests in education, urbanization, and gender studies at the University of Cape Town in South Africa.“I want to take courses that are related to South African culture as well as the social issues that I am interested in exploring,” says Sosa, who hopes that her experience in South Africa“will open my eyes to a whole new world of ideas.”
