The high-tech camera, along with reduced foliage and brighter lights, is meant to increase safety along the trail leading to the Haverford College Apartments.
New technology is making the Haverford College Apartments (HCA) trail safer than ever.
Safety & Security has installed a new security camera on the HCA trail. The Bosch PTZ (pan-tilt-zoom) features a motion-sensor device that records all activity in the area on a 24-hour continuous loop.“It's the best camera on campus,” says John Castrege, Card Access Administrator.“It's the fourth generation of its kind and it uses the latest and greatest technology, resulting in improved speed and greater clarity.” Safety & Security's goals for the camera are to prevent incidents and to help solve any problems that might occur.
Everything the camera observes is saved on a 24-7 digital recording system in the basement of the Gardner Integrated Athletic Center (GIAC), below Safety & Security's offices. If an incident is captured by the camera, Castrege and company can easily review it.
Safety & Security and Facilities Management have also teamed up to prune the foliage along the HCA trail and brighten the area with new white lights that use twice as many lumens as their predecessors.“There's a substantially different feel on the trail—that corridor/tunnel effect is gone,” says Safety & Security director Tom King, who says these changes were made in response to feedback from students on the Safety & Security Committee, as well as anecdotes from students who felt uncomfortable on the previously dimly lit trail.
“We are responsive to students' requests,” says King.“If anyone else has suggestions on how to improve security on campus, we're all ears.”
