Details
Wednesday, April 9th at 7pm, Stokes 104 (CPGC Café)
Since 2002, Nobel Peace Laureates have gathered in Rome to craft their recommendations for a more peaceful world. Past Nobel Laureates have included his holiness, the Dalai Lama, Mikhail Gorbachev, Muhammad Yunus, Mairead Corrigan Maguire, Lech Walesa, Betty Williams, F.W. de Klerk, and many representatives of Nobel-winning organizations.
Come join us for a panel presentation and discussion of the 8th World Summit of Nobel Peace Laureates with guest speakers Mary Ellen McNish, Jonathan Granoff, and Haverford student Emily Higgs, '08. The speakers will convey the spirit and substance of the Summit, and offer a window into the work of their individual organizations.
Mary Ellen McNish, General Secretary of the American Friends Service Committee, is responsible for the administration of programs and projects in more than 22 countries and nine regions in the U.S. In 2007 Mary Ellen served on a U.S. religious delegation to Iran, meeting with religious and political leaders there in the hope of improving relations between the people of Iran and the U.S. She has represented the AFSC at the Nobel Peace Summit every year since 2002, and participated in the drafting of the Charter for a World Without Violence.
Jonathan Granoff, President of the Global Security Institute, is also Co-Chair of the Blue Ribbon Task Force on Nuclear Nonproliferation and Senior Advisor to National Security Committee of the International Law Section of the American Bar Association. As a Senior Adviser to the Rome Summit of Nobel Peace Laureates, he has participated in the Summits since 2002, representing the Laureate Organization, the International Peace Bureau. He has been involved in the drafting of Nobel Laureates statements, including the Rome Declaration and Charter for a World Without Violence signed by the Laureates and Laureate Organizations.
