Howard Lutnick '83 has been appointed co-chair of the Board of Managers, and Dana Shanler Ladden '84 will be a vice-chair.
Haverford College, one of the nation's most selective liberal arts colleges, has appointed Howard Lutnick '83 co-chair of its 33-member Board of Managers. His term begins July 1, 2012, and comes after six years as a vice-chair. The open position at vice-chair will be filled by Board member Dana Shanler Ladden '84.
“These changes will both energize and bring fresh perspective to our board leadership,” said Cathy Koshland '72, with whom Lutnick will share duties of chair.“Not only are we recognizing Howard's decades-long commitment to Haverford, but we're allowing the College to most fully benefit from his guidance and support.” She said that the elevation of Ladden, an attorney by profession and current chair of the Board's Audit Committee,“underscores the Board leadership's commitment to the principles of sound, responsible governance. It will be an honor to serve with such distinguished, accomplished and devoted alumni.”
Lutnick is Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of both Cantor Fitzgerald, L.P., a leading financial services firm, and BGC Partners, Inc. A preeminent capital markets investment bank, Cantor is recognized for its strengths in the equity and fixed income capital markets, its global distribution model and for its expanding presence as the leading independent middle market investment bank. BGC is a leading global intermediary to the wholesale financial and real estate markets, specializing in the brokering of a broad range of financial products including fixed income, foreign exchange, equities, as well as real estate through its Newmark Grubb Knight Frank division.
“Haverford has played an enormous role in my life,” said Lutnick.“It was Haverford that taught me the principles that guided me to the decision to care for the families of those we lost in the tragic events of September 11th.” Lutnick's firm was located on the 101st-105th floors of One World Trade Center and lost 658 of their 960 New York headquarters employees, including Lutnick's brother Gary and his friends Douglas Gardner '83 and Calvin Gooding '84.
“Howard's 17 years of leadership service to Haverford are remarkable,” noted Interim President Joanne V. Creighton.“In addition to Board membership, he chaired the most successful comprehensive fundraising campaign in Haverford history. He endowed five student scholarships and stewarded the creation of the Cantor Fitzgerald Art Gallery, which has been the wellspring for the resurgence of the visual arts at the College. He funded the College's Tennis & Track Center, named for his brother Gary and built the Douglas B. Gardner '83 Integrated Athletic Center, which reflects Howard's—and Haverford's—commitment to balancing academic and athletic excellence.”
Chris Norton '80 has served with Lutnick as a vice-chair, and will continue in that role.“From scholarships to Olympic-quality facilities, Howard wants our students to have every advantage at a critical point in their lives. This will be an exciting and inspiring period in the College's distinguished history.”
Lutnick's new role creates an opening at vice-chair, which will be filled by Dana Shanler Ladden '84. A Board member since 2002, she is Special Counsel at MetLife Inc., where she specializes in corporate and securities law, and earned her J.D. from the Benjamin J. Cardozo School of Law at Yeshiva University. Like Lutnick, she has long supported the College both philanthropically and through myriad volunteer roles including class volunteer, Chair of Annual Giving and membership on the Alumni Executive Committee. She is the current chair of the Board's Audit Committee.“I'm moved by your faith in me,” she said in accepting the appointment,“and promise to do my best by you so that we may all do our best by Haverford.”
