HAVERFORD TODAY: A STUDENT'S PERSPECTIVE
Details
Narrowing my choice of a college down from a starting group of 13 schools was no easy task when acceptance letters came out in high school. However, as I now enter my junior year at Haverford, I couldn't be happier with my decision. I am a psychology major with a German minor.
Academic life at Haverford is as rigorous, but as enjoyable, as I think possible. Even though each day after class I leave with hours of work awaiting me that evening, I'm always looking forward to the next day. While we're clearly a small college, the variety of courses offered continues to astound me. I have had classes ranging in size from six to 100, but even the large classes allow for discussion and the ability to get to know the professors. While the professors do plenty of research, their top priority is their students. This past summer I was able to do research with one of my psychology professors. The opportunity to do research as an undergraduate is very rare and I feel very lucky to be going to an institution that allows me this unique chance.
I also play squash for the varsity team here at Haverford. The new Athletic Center (usually referred to as the GIAC or the Doug) with its five brand new squash courts is breathtaking. From mid-October through February we practice in the afternoons, alternating with the men's team by either using the courts first or working on fitness. Weekends are often spent away at tournaments at other schools since there are not many teams nearby to play during the week.
Even though my weeks get filled up quickly with work and sports during the academic year, there is always time for hanging out with friends. We'll take study breaks in the Lunt Café to get pizza and snacks, go to see a weekend movie at Sharpless Auditorium, travel into Philly to go to a restaurant or museum, or do some shopping.
The fall is a special time for returning students as we reconnect with our classmates and begin another school year. My junior year promises to be another great year at Haverford College.
