Haverford Junior Awarded Prestigious Fellowship

Bailey, an anthropology major and a native of Newport, R.I., will use her $4,500 fellowship to study the culture and traditions of the Gypsy or Roma people of Spain this summer. "I am endlessly fascinated with the societal makeup of other cultures and the ways in which their views and values are expressed through language and art," she says. "I believe that one can learn a great deal about a society through the way it expresses itself creatively."
The Michael P. Metcalf Memorial Fund, established in memory of former Providence Journal chairman and publisher Michael Metcalf, supports self-designed adventures for college students and promotes personal growth through travel. The Rhode Island Foundation, founded in 1916, is one of the nation's largest and oldest charitable organizations serving a specific geographic community.
