Starting next summer, the College will welcome gifted pre-collegiate students to campus for two three-week residential sessions.
The Center for Talented Youth (CTY), a leading provider of academic enrichment programming for children and teens, is coming to Haverford College starting next summer.
The two three-week sessions begin in late June, and will complement other summer opportunities, such as the Julian Krinsky camps that Haverford has hosted for years.
“It's a privilege to work with CTY,” said Interim Haverford College President Joanne Creighton. “Their longstanding commitment to excellence speaks for itself, and we look forward to welcoming many of the country's brightest young minds to campus.”
Since 1979, CTY has been identifying and developing the talents of the most gifted pre-collegiate students worldwide. In 2012 the CTY Summer Programs served over 9,450 students. At CTY's summer residential programs, held at colleges and universities across the country, students take one course that meets all day, Monday through Friday, allowing them to immerse themselves in a focused area of study.
Here at Haverford, students will live in college housing, including Tritton, Kim, Barclay and Jones halls. For the College, the arrangement is consistent with a larger strategic goal of providing a rich set of summer programs that contribute to the intellectual vitality of the campus.

Elaine Hansen, executive director of CTY and a former provost at Haverford, is equally excited about the plan.“I can't imagine a more appropriate setting for a CTY summer program,” says Hansen.“It's a perfect fit for us, both literally and figuratively. The beauty of the campus—a pastoral gem in the middle of an exciting metro area—will inspire our students and provide plenty of safe space for activities, and its proximity to Philadelphia by various forms of public transit will expedite travel. The historic values of the Haverford academic community, founded by Quakers and still distinguished by a strong social and academic Honor Code, are also well aligned with the values of CTY, where the emphasis is on learning in and belonging to a talented group of independent young thinkers.”
