Haverford junior track athletes Emma Lo and Joe Awantang have been named 2007 Arthur Ashe Sports Scholars in track & field.
Haverford junior track athletes Emma Lo and Joe Awantang have been named 2007 Arthur Ashe Sports Scholars in track & field. Lo was named to the first team, while Awantang was named second team. Only 10 percent of student-athletes selected for this national honor are from Division III colleges. The entire roster of Ashe Scholars was presented in the April 5, 2007 edition of Diverse Issues in Higher Education.
According to head women's track & field coach Fran Rizzo, Lo "is a consistent runner whose best days are ahead of her." Lo placed in the 3,000 and 5,000 meters at the Centennial indoor track & field championships this February. Lo finished 6th at the CC Championships in the 3,000 meters in 10:47.57, and fourth in the 5,000 meters in 18:41.92. On April sixth, Lo ran the 10,000 meters in 38:11.23, which is the sixth best finish all-time in that event in Haverford women's outdoor track & field program history.
Lo, a fine arts major, is a two-time Centennial Conference Academic Honor Roll track & field selection, making the grade in the winter 2006 and 2007 seasons.
Awantang holds the Haverford and Centennial Conference indoor and outdoor shot put records. Awantang's indoor shot put record was a 52'-11" toss set on February 25 at this year's Centennial championship. Awantang's outdoor toss of 52'-10" was set in his freshman year on May 5, 2005. Awantang has provisionally qualified for NCAA outdoor nationals as a freshman and a sophomore, and provisionally qualified for the NCAA indoor nationals this season for the first time. In addition to his many weight-throwing feats, Awantang is a three-time Centennial Conference Academic Honor Roll selection, majoring in French
Lo is featured on page 38 of the April 5, 2007 edition of Diverse Issues in Higher Education, while Awantang is highlighted with a photo on page 47.
In order for a student-athlete to be recognized as an Arthur Ashe Scholar-Athlete, the individual must be a student of color, maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.2 or higher on a 4.0 grading scale, be an active member of an intercollegiate athletic team during the 2006-2007 academic year, and have a demonstrated record of service to the campus or community.
