A Century of Haverford Alumni Photographers
Details
May 30 - September 21, 2008
Photographs were first acquired for instructional purposes at Haverford College in 1870, and since that time, alumni of the college have become photographers of the first rank, making major contributions to the field. The College celebrates this artistic legacy with an exhibit entitled A Century of Haverford Alumni Photographers, running May 30-Sept. 21, 2008, in the College's Cantor Fitzgerald Gallery. The exhibit is curated by William Earle Williams, Audrey A. and John L. Dusseau Professor in the Humanities and Curator of Photography. An opening reception will be held Friday, May 30, from 4:30-6 p.m. in the Gallery.
The exhibit begins with the work of John G. Bullock Class of 1874 and continues with the Vauxes (George 1884,William 1893 and their sister Mary, and George's son George 1930); Edwin Rosskam 1924; Peter Moore 1955; and concludes with the work of Andrew Borowiec 1978. The work ranges from the pictorial landscapes and portraits of Bullock to the conceptual and documentary photographs of Peter Moore.
The Haverford College Fine Art Photography Collection and Art Library have acquired examples of these artists' photographs and books, with the Bullock photography and manuscript holdings the most comprehensive of any in a public collection. Loans from public and private collections allow each photographer representation by a critical group of his or her works. A Century of Haverford Alumni Photographers brings together for the first time an overview of the significant contributions these Haverfordians made to the field and will put on record an unexplored part of the history of Philadelphia photography.
