Hello! My name is Ellie, and I am a rising junior at Haverford where I am studying computer science and economics. This summer, I’ve been fortunate to embark on a summer internship at Octaura.
Octaura is a fintech startup whose mission is to centralize, simplify, and accelerate the trading of syndicated loans and CLOs through an electronic trading platform. As a software engineer intern, my primary responsibility revolves around developing a metrics dashboard alongside two other interns. By utilizing real-time data from the electronic trading platform, the dashboard aims to provide clients with essential information that guides their trading decisions. This includes actionable insights into market trends, trade opportunities, and the overall benefits of utilizing Octaura’s platform. The metrics dashboard not only serves as a tool for clients but also acts as a testament to the platform’s efficacy, thereby encouraging increased trade volume.
This project is an exciting opportunity as I will be able to experience and participate in the development life cycle from start to finish. One of the most exciting aspects of my internship at Octaura has been the exposure to new technologies and domains. In order to develop the metrics dashboard, I have had the chance to explore and utilize various tools, frameworks, and programming languages. This exposure has not only broadened my technical skill set but also challenged me to think critically and adapt to unfamiliar environments. Gaining hands-on experience has been invaluable in allowing me to grow professionally and providing me insight into what software engineering truly entails.
Based on my experience, I would strongly encourage fellow students to seek out internship positions at startups. Unlike larger corporations, startups offer an environment that fosters holistic learning and involvement in multiple facets of the company. At Octaura, I have been fortunate to witness firsthand the interconnectedness of technology and finance. Through interactions with colleagues, I have gained insights into the financial aspect of the company, understanding how my work directly contributes to Octaura’s overarching goals. Additionally, the close-knit nature of a startup ensures that colleagues are approachable, accessible, and always willing to guide and mentor—a crucial element in my growth as a professional. The collaborative culture at Octaura has exceeded my expectations. As an intern, I have been encouraged to contribute ideas, ask questions, and actively participate in decision-making processes. This inclusive environment has not only enhanced my technical skills but also nurtured a sense of belonging within the organization.
My internship at Octaura has so far been an amazing experience that has broadened my knowledge, skills, and professional aspirations. I’ve learned so much from everyone I have worked with, and I’m excited for the rest of the summer. I am thankful to the CCPA, Octuara, and to Whitehead Partner for funding this internship and allowing me to have this transformative opportunity. I am confident that the experience gained at Octaura will positively impact my future endeavors and I look forward to continuing my journey in the world of technology and finance.
