This summer, I worked with Discover Haverford, a local nonprofit dedicated to fostering economic growth in Haverford Township by supporting local businesses and promoting the township as a destination. My work included hands-on event planning, social media marketing, and data analytics.
The Haverfood Festival is one of the largest events that Discover Haverford organizes. It is a great event to kick off the summer with local food vendors and trucks, face painting, a dunk tank, raffles, and more. I got to create social media content and marketing materials to try and reach as many township residents as possible and help organize the festival. While the weather was not so forgiving, the festival was a huge success, with nearly two thousand attendees throughout the night. It was incredible to see all the hard work pay off, and hopefully there will be more Haverfood Festivals in the future.
I had the unique opportunity to attend the Pennsylvania Downtown Center’s Premier Revitalization Conference in York with my colleagues. This conference is for downtown revitalization nonprofits across the state to attend workshops, seminars, and more. My favorite event was on the first night of the conference where the team and I went on a walking tour of York’s art district. We visited local galleries and artisans where we collected letters to spell “YORK PA” for our own art piece. Along with the workshops, I learned more about the history and revitalization efforts of York, Pennsylvania, and even got to attend a minor league baseball game. Getting to network with other economic development nonprofits and learn about their revitalization efforts was interesting and inspiring.
In the office, I was working on several projects, including creating a detailed report from the consumer survey, organizing sponsors' social media accounts, and writing welcome articles for new small businesses that entered the township. Throughout my time, I got to meet with local businesses across the township and learn more about their story and their legacy. Being able to help create a vibrant community is tricky at times, but is ultimately very rewarding.
I would like to send a huge thank you to the Discover Haverford team, Jeanne, Sarah, and Lynn, for creating such a great learning environment and the Whitehead Internship Program for sponsoring this opportunity!
