I teach a range of biology classes, including Bio200 (the introduction to the Biology major); Molecular Virology; Molecular Microbiology; and Superlab/Bio300 (including Biochemistry Superlab and Bioinformatics Superlab).
My laboratory, the Microbial Ecology and Evolution Laboratory, investigates how interactions between bacteria affect their genomic evolution, using the pathogenic bacteria Streptococcus pneumoniae and other Streptococcus species. The lab focuses on chemical communication between bacteria; chemicals produced by bacteria to kill off competitors; and the effects of DNA transferred between cells, such as with antibiotic resistance genes spreading from cell to cell.
My weekly lab meetings are open to any student; please contact me for the time of the week that we meet (as this changes semester-by-semester). Attending lab meetings is the first step (regardless of which laboratory or student class year) for students intersested in biology research at Haverford College.
