Biography
I have taught inorganic, biological and general chemistry in the Haverford College Department of Chemistry since 1988. My doctoral studies at U. C. Berkeley were in the labs of Prof. Kenneth Raymond, and before coming to Haverford, I spent three years as a post-doctoral research associate of Prof. Lawrence Que, Jr. at the University of Minnesota.
Education
B.A., Oberlin College, 1980
Ph.D., University of California, Berkeley, 1985
Research
My research interests are in the area of Bioinorganic Chemistry, and I generally have several students working with me in the bioinorganic chemistry research lab at Haverford College. We are particularly interested in synthesizing new coordination compounds that exhibit reactivity with oxygen and other small molecules that is similar to the reactivity found in metalloenzymes in biological systems, in order to better understand the biological processes and possibly to create new and technologically useful chemical catalysts and/or sensors. In recent years we have been focusing on coordination complexes of guanidine-containing ligands.
