Progress Update: Better Learning, Broader Impact – Haverford 2030

We are pleased to report substantial progress in the implementation of our strategic plan Better Learning, Broader Impact – Haverford 2030 as we head into the 2024-25 academic year. Thanks to the generosity of alums and friends, the support of external partners, and the leadership and commitment of our faculty, students, and staff, we are advancing several transformative initiatives. Below is an update on a number of notable areas of development:
The Centrality of the Liberal Arts: Knowledge, Wisdom, Practice (Lead: Provost Linda Strong-Leek)
- Bill Harris '49, Jim Kinsella '82, and Bob McNeal have pledged $7 million to integrate ethical entrepreneurship into Haverford's liberal arts education. Read More
- A $1.5 million grant from the Mellon Foundation will support "Together with Humanities: Language, Community, and Power," an initiative also connected to the Ethical Inquiry and Leadership Institute and Fords in Action (more information on those below). This initiative will introduce co-taught courses and community-based curricula to activate the humanities across the curriculum. Read More
The Ethical Inquiry and Leadership Institute (Leads: Professors Sorelle Friedler and Jill Stauffer)
- Michael B. Kim '85 P’17 has donated $25 million to establish a new institute with curriculum development, professorships, and a new building for ethical leadership. Read More
Fords in Action (Leads: CPGC Director Eric Hartman and Professor Joshua Moses)
- The Graterford Archive: A $2.5 million Mellon Foundation grant, also connected to the Centrality of the Liberal Arts and the Ethical Inquiry and Leadership Institute initiatives above, will fund the development and implementation of The Graterford Archive, which will gather and preserve the stories of creative, participatory leadership that emerged from State Correctional Facility - Graterford. The grant will also support the development of praxis courses informed by justice-impacted leaders. Read More
One Team: Elevating Haverford College Athletics (Lead: Dean of the College John McKnight)
- Our Facilities team has upgraded the Class of 1995 Softball Field, Walton Field, and the scorer’s building on Swan Field.
- Donors have committed more than $1 million in early support of the Athletics Action Plan. This includes gifts to fund assistant coaches for men’s and women’s lacrosse and endowment support for women’s and men’s track and field and cross-country, recognizing the retirement of legendary coaches Fran Rizzo and Tom Donnelly.
Summer Experiences for All (Lead: Dean of the College John McKnight)
- Alex Robinson '96 and his wife Monica made a generous $2 million gift to seed this initiative that will cover the cost of at least one paid internship or other summer experience for every Haverford student. More details coming soon.
Campus Renewal: Living-Learning Spaces (Lead: VP for Finance and Administration Nico Washington)
- Our Comprehensive Campus Plan with Sasaki Associates is underway, and a final report on future campus development will be released soon. Read More
- Facilities completed targeted summer rehab work on residence halls including Kim, Tritton, Barclay, Gummere, Lunt, HCA, and 710 College Ave.
- Renovation of the KINSC Machine Shop and ongoing efforts to redesign and create new faculty research spaces within the KINSC are also in progress.
Sustainable Haverford for a Just and Livable Future (Lead: VP & Chief of Staff Jesse Lytle)
- Haverford is investing in the Sebree Solar II project to boost renewable energy credits toward its goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2033. Read More
Haverford Forward: Investing in Our People (Lead: VP for Institutional Diversity, Equity, and Access Nikki Young)
- Haverford is collaborating with Mercer on a compensation study to develop a new salary framework for faculty and staff. Read More
- Haverford has received a grant from the Pennsylvania Consortium for Liberal Arts Colleges to fund Mentored Career Development Awards, fostering collaboration and mentorship between Haverford faculty and external scholars.
Strategic Data: Impact and Effectiveness (Lead: Chief Information Officer Megan Fitch)
- The $2.25 million Title III Uplift grant is funding a project to enhance data infrastructure and support campus diversity, equity, and belonging. Read More
These initiatives represent critical steps forward in realizing the vision of Haverford 2030. We are deeply grateful for the continued support and engagement of our community as we work together to ensure that Haverford remains at the forefront of liberal arts education, preparing our students to lead lives of integrity, ambition, and purpose.
Please note a leadership change for Implementation Committee 2030 (IC2030), with Associate Provost Helen White stepping into the co-chair role this year. We are also pleased that Yehyun Song ‘25 will join IC2030 along with representatives from the faculty’s Strategic Curriculum and Personnel Committee.
