Congratulations to the Grupo de Apoyo Mutuo
The Grupo de Apoyo Mutuo (GAM) project was recently added to #MemoriasSituadas, a continually updated interactive map of sites of memory related to serious human rights violations, collected by The International Center for the Promotion of Human Rights (CIPDH-UNESCO).
Our congratulations to the GAM, and to the Libraries staff who have partnered with the organization since 2017 to create and maintain the GAM Digital Archive!
This collaborative digitization project preserves and provides access to the most current and complete record of the internal armed conflict in Guatemala between 1960 and 1996. According to the United Nations Historical Clarification Commission, more than 200,000 people were killed during this conflict, of whom 45,000 are still missing and nearly one million were forcibly displaced. The GAM works to bring justice to the disappeared and dignify the voices of the victims of this conflict.
From 1983 to 2023, the GAM archive has gathered approximately 25,000 files containing detailed information on 3,500 cases of enforced disappearances, 80% of which are now digitized, including more than 3,300 records added through partnership with Haverford Libraries and the CPGC.
Students interested in working with the GAM through a summer fellowship can still apply until February 11, 2024! Summer intern(s) will learn about Guatemala, the GAM organization, and the archival materials. Interns will also have structured support and supervision from a research and digital scholarship librarian from the Libraries.
