Summer Series 2023: Econsult Solutions
Details
Funding Source: Whitehead Internship Program
As a math and economics student with an interest in consulting, I was excited to be a Whitehead research intern at Econsult Solutions Inc. The company’s reputation for providing economic consulting and analytical services to a diverse clientele made it an ideal environment to apply my academic knowledge and gain practical experience. Throughout my time at Econsult, I’ve had the opportunity to collaborate with talented individuals, engage in meaningful projects, and expand my skills.
At Econsult Solutions, my work schedule consists of being remote on Monday and Friday and working in the office on Tuesday through Thursday. I’ve enjoyed this hybrid style as there’s been good balance of collaboration and individual work. Working alongside other interns, I have had the opportunity to exchange ideas, learn from their experiences, and foster a sense of camaraderie within the team. Additionally, my regular meetings with directors and analysts have provided guidance and insights that enhance my understanding leading and working on a project.
One of the significant projects I contributed to was researching and writing a report on predatory lending policies throughout the United States. This endeavor required a deep dive into common predatory lending practices, as well as a comprehensive examination of individual state policies and organizations aimed at curbing these practices. The research phase allowed me to explore the intricacies of lending regulations, identify patterns, and develop a nuanced understanding of the challenges faced by vulnerable communities. As the project progressed, I had the opportunity to contribute to writing the report, synthesizing complex information into a concise and impactful document. This ongoing project has been both challenging and rewarding, as it has provided me with a platform to apply my research and writing skills.
In addition to the predatory lending project, I also worked on modeling the effects of a proposed development — a performing arts center with a high-rise apartment building on top — in Hoboken. This project involved extensive research into zoning and construction laws within the area. By analyzing similar developments in other locations, we aimed to gain insights into potential costs and revenues associated with the proposed project. This experience has exposed me to the intricate interplay between economic development and urban planning.
My experience as a research intern at Econsult Solutions Inc. has been a rewarding and enjoyable thus far and I’m excited for the rest of the summer. The opportunity to contribute to ongoing projects, such as the predatory lending report and the modeling of a performing arts center, has not only enhanced my technical skills but also given me a new interest. I am grateful for the guidance and support provided by the Econsult team.
