Department of Music
Private Study
Students may take private lessons in voice, piano, classical guitar, or an orchestral instrument (including percussion) during their time at Haverford for one-half graded credit per semester.
A roster of excellent teachers who are already approved for study and teach on campus are listed below, many of whom are associated with the Curtis Institute, Temple University, and perform with major musical organizations in the city. In addition, a student may request a teacher for an instrument not currently listed. Instrumental students may ask permission to study with any teacher in the Greater Philadelphia area whose credentials are approved by the Department of Music.
Students must take 10 lessons a semester and perform a jury at the end of the semester to qualify for credit. Lessons are given a letter grade.
The Department of Music offers subsidies each semester to students who wish to study privately and are active in department-led ensembles. Subsidies range from partial to full subsidy and are awarded depending on student involvement in the program (Music majors and minors receive a greater subsidy).
