Undergraduate Philosophy Consortium Friday October 2
Details
The Undergraduate Philosophy Consortium for 2020, organized by Department Representatives Moselle Burke and Sofia Esner, with guest judge Amaka Eze (BMC '19), will take place over Zoom, from 2:00 pm - 5:00 pm this Friday.
The Undergraduate Philosophy Consortium is an annual event hosted by the Haverford Philosophy Department that celebrates the work produced by undergraduates in their philosophy courses. Six students are selected to present their papers, three each from those who originally submitted their work for 100-level courses and 200-/300-level courses. Their papers and presentations will be heard and judged by a panel consisting of the two Department Representatives and an alumni judge. One winner in each category will be awarded a cash prize for their work.
There are many reasons to attend--all students and non-faculty are welcome. It's a great way for intro students to get a feel for high-quality papers and presentations, an opportunity to support your friends, and a chance to think about some things you otherwise might not have! The event runs from 2:00 pm - 5:00 pm, Friday, October 2, and includes the following presenters:
2:00 – Welcome and introduction
2:10 – Sam Aronson: “The contradictions within branded content: a Barthesian reading”
2:40 – Aidan Chapin: "God as an Author: Why God has Good Reason to Deceive Us"
3:10 – 10 minute break
3:20 – Sam Monks: “Aristotle's Taxonomy: Thinking Homonymously”
3:50 – Jade Rousseau: “Knowing how to wait in Aristotle’s theory of virtue”
4:20 – 10 minute break
4:30 – Izzy Spagat: “Perception as a Dual Process”
5:00 – Adena Kibel: “Beyond Cleverness and Follies”
Our 2020 guest judge is Amaka Eze (BMC ‘19). Amaka currently assists Haverford’s Professor Miller in his research, and is the Program Assistant for the Pew Research Center for Arts and Heritage in the Exhibitions & Public Interpretation program. She recently presented her thesis research at the Collegium of Black Women Philosophers at Penn State University.
