VCAM Student Programs Continue Online for Summer 2020

VCAM’s summer student initiatives—the HIP Innovation Incubator, the Maker Arts Space Design + Making Collaborative Fellowship, and the joint VCAM-Hurford Center Summer DocuLab Program—will all be continuing online for summer 2020.
Across these three programs, Tri-College students will spend the summer developing 2D and 3D prototypes of prosthetic devices, engaging in problem-based creative and entrepreneurial thinking, and exploring the intersection of animation and documentary film.
The Haverford Innovations Program (HIP) is excited to announce the 2020 Innovation Incubator’s move to a virtual format this summer. Since the 2018 pilot, the Incubator has embraced remote conferencing, telework, and flexible scheduling, encouraging cohorts to explore the advantages and challenges of remote collaborating. Becoming an all-virtual workplace allows the Incubator to explore areas of expansion and access.
In the 2020 cycle, HIP looks to open programming and resources to students and alumni interested in learning innovation methodologies and building entrepreneurial skills. Once scheduling is solidified, Haverford is invited to learn more about how to participate. HIP looks forward to supporting the curiosity, creativity, and energy of this community.
The VCAM’s Maker Arts Space’s Design + Making Collaborative Fellowship is also moving to an online format for the summer of 2020. Students participating in the summer fellowship will collaborate virtually on 2D and 3D prototypes of prosthetic devices, utilizing digital platforms that emphasize collaboration while working remotely. This independent version of the summer fellowship will allow students to dive deeper on design and design strategies and gain a more comprehensive understanding of theoretical making strategies. Much of what was originally planned will not change, but instead of creating simple physical prototypes, students will be able to design more complicated digital versions.
Jointly administered by VCAM and the Hurford Center for the Arts and Humanities, the Summer DocuLab Program will shift online for its third year with “Animating Grief: Incorporating Memories, Dreams, and Apparitions in Documentary Filmmaking.” Led by animator/filmmaker Cybee Bloss and Haverford Mellon Post-Doctoral Fellow and Visiting Assistant Professor of Anthropology and Visual Studies Elena Guzman, student fellows will explore grief, mental health, and intersectionality by conceptualizing, developing, and creating animated scenes for the film Smile4Kime in virtual collaboration with local Philadelphia artists.
