October Haverford House Update from Amanda Grolig '19
Details
Each month we'll hear from a Haverford House Fellow about their work, house activities, and independent projects that connect the Haverford College community with Philadelphia. Keep up with Haverford House events and more at @haverfordhouse.
Hey everyone! I hope you enjoyed Spooky Season and aren’t too blue now that we’re moving on with the rest of the calendar year. We certainly had a busy and exciting October over here at Haverford House with lots to celebrate: Feven’s birthday on the 13th, Lili’s birthday on the 18th (we love our Libras in this house!), and, of course, Halloween.
One of the highlights of this month with a really fun camping trip in the New Jersey Pine Barrens. We spent the weekend hiking, cooking by the fire, and snuggling in our five-person tent. While it got a bit chilly at times, the whole experience was a great opportunity to get to know one another even better. As someone with little camping experience, the fact that I had such a good time (less than desirable sleeping conditions included) is really a testament to how wonderful my house mates are.
We quickly got into the Halloween spirit and started planning a gathering to celebrate the holiday. A few fake cobwebs, three jack-o-lanterns, and 144 bat stickers later, and the event went off without a hitch! It was a great opportunity to bring people together from different areas of our lives: work friends, Haverford friends, and even a couple neighbors.
Aside from fun social events, we are all continuing our work both in our placement organizations and our projects. I am currently in the process of coordinating a Let’s Circle Up restorative justice education workshop. The event will hopefully take place some time in February—more information will be coming soon! I also had the chance to talk about how my work incorporates Haverford’s values of trust, concern, and respect at the Haverford Speaks event during Family and Friends weekend. I’m hopeful that both of these events will encourage Haverford students to get involved with Let’s Circle Up and restorative justice more generally.
It feels like we’re getting into the swing of things now. I’m really excited to see where the rest of the year takes us!
