September Haverford House Update from Feven Gezahegn '19
Details
Each month we'll hear from a Haverford House Fellow about their work, house activities, and independent projects that connect the Haverford College community with Philadelphia. Keep up with Haverford House events and more at @haverfordhouse.
September has been a pretty busy month for the Haverford House crew. We started the month by visiting Haverford on September 6th for the Celebrate Community event, which Gabe helped plan. It was cool to see several other organizations represented as well. We got to meet first years and even had some sign up as volunteers for our organizations.
We also had our "nibble and scribble" event on the 20th. We had several baked goods and wrote letters to our representatives urging them to support legislations related to immigration policy, prison reform and welfare reform.
We have also been hard at work at our organizations. At AFAHO, I have been working with our case managers to support and connect them with various resources that exist in Philadelphia. Our after-school program just started in October 1st and through it, I have been able to get to know and work with some of the amazing kids in the program. I have also been working on trying to organize our volunteer program and hope I will be able to make a system that works best for the organization.
It is hard to believe that we have already spent 3 months in the house, but I have enjoyed getting to know and learn from the other fellows both formally through our dinners and meetings and informally during our impromptu hiking trips and after work. I am so excited for what the rest of the year (how are we 1/4th of the way done already?) holds.
