Michelle Angela Ortiz is an award winning visual artist/ skilled muralist/ community arts educator who uses her art as a vehicle to represent people and communities whose histories are often lost or co-opted. Through community arts practices, painting, and public art installations, she creates a safe space for dialogue around some of the most profound issues communities and individuals may face. Her work tells stories using richly crafted and emotive imagery to claim and transform spaces into a visual affirmation that reveals the strength and spirit of the community. For 20 years, Ortiz has designed and created over 50 large-scale public works nationally and internationally independently and as a United States Cultural Envoy.
A strong applicant would possess the following qualifications:
- A commitment to social justice and an interest in working with diverse communities.
- Has an understanding and appreciation for arts and culture
- Knowledge on building curriculum and lesson plans
- Knowledge on issues related to immigration, human rights, detention, deportation, and mass incarceration
- Ability to do research on specific topics and present summaries to review
- Ability to attend meetings and work independently or remotely as required
- Ability to organize roundtable events, setup presentations, take notes, and report back
- Willingness to travel on public transportation throughout the city.
- Fluent in the Spanish language a plus
Summer 2019 Internship Description
- Support the creation of education resources that tie in with public art projects led by the Artist
- Tasks may include (but are not limited to) organizing educator roundtable sessions, searching for educational resources, building curriculum with the Artist centered on immigration/ human rights/ and mass incarceration issues, and investigating ways to share these educational resources in different venues, colleges, and/or in digital form
Application Information: This internship is open to Haverford students. Applicants must submit an application form, a cover letter, resume, and your transcript (unofficial is fine). CPGC’s Fellowships for Global Citizenship Program: This summer internship is part of a larger fellowship that offers a comprehensive preparatory and re-entry program along with funding and support during your summer engagement. Prior to the summer internship, CPGC staff, faculty and community partners will help students build on their passions and capacities for ethical engagement and social change action. Fellows continue their journey through a re-entry course upon returning to campus in the fall. More specific information about these crucial elements of the Fellowship program can be found here.
Pre-internship Programming
- All Philadelphia-area fellows will attend a dynamic week of activities during the week of May 19-24, 2019 (based on campus with daily trips into Philadelphia).
- The 2019 CPGC Fellow cohort will meet on or near campus for a half-day retreat on April 7th, and engage in other preparatory activities during the Spring semester that will be relevant to their fellowships.
Stipend: The CPGC funds a 10-week internship, including travel, lodging (at HCA or in Philadelphia), local transportation, food, and the summer earnings expectation for students who receive financial aid.
Deadline: All application materials are due by February 17, 2019. The application process includes an interview with Michelle Angela Ortiz.
