For more than a decade, Haverford's AIDS Service Network (ASN) has utilized spring break as a time to learn about, connect with, and make positive inroads against the AIDS epidemic. With funding from the Center for Peace and Global Citizenship, Students' Council, and the Office of Multicultural Affairs, ASN offers a week of fully-funded, immersive learning in New York City, where trip participants volunteer at GMHC, the country's first and leading provider of care, prevention, and advocacy for people living with HIV and AIDS. In addition to working at GMHC, where we will help with office tasks, serve food in the community dining hall, pack safe-sex kits, and talk with GMHC leadership about the organization's work to end AIDS, we will attend the historic, weekly ACT-UP meeting, hear from a panel of Haverford alumni that work in the fields of public health and advocacy, and discuss ways to turn our trip experience into new forms of action on campus and beyond.

Students in all disciplines will find this trip meaningful, regardless of their familiarity with the history of the AIDS epidemic. It is our hope that this trip, and the people with whom and for whom we will work, will inspire in participants new ways of understanding the constant history-making for which HIV and AIDS are responsible. We hope this trip inspires participants to ask in what ways the AIDS epidemic may have touched their own communities, to realize that undoubtedly, a parent, relative, or older friend has a story to share about how their life was affected by the epidemic, and to realize that HIV and AIDS are not simply public health crises of the 1980s and '90s, but are issues that plague the local, national, and global communities this very moment. - Adam Stambor '18
