High Rocks Fall Break Program
Details
Apply now for the week-long community engagement program in Pocahontas County, West Virginia. Deadline: Sunday, September 24th.
Join CPGC interns Claudia Rivera '18 and Becca Richie '20 along with a group of Haverford students for a week of activities in service to the mission of High Rocks Education Corporation. The organization, located in the mountains of West Virginia, educates, empowers, and inspires young people to lead active lives and to work towards the long-term betterment of their community. Through year-round after-school tutoring, public events, and classes, in addition to their cornerstone summer camp program, High Rocks provides a critical educational support system for the County and surrounding towns.
This annual fall break program gives Haverford students an opportunity to connect with the High Rocks community and continue the long-standing partnership between the the organization and the CPGC. Harvesting vegetables in the garden, maintaining the site's recreational structures, and making snacks for the after-school program have been highlights for past participants, as Rosemary Cohen '18 explains:
We volunteered our time to help out at High Rocks’ campground site, which needed to be fixed up and winterized, especially in the aftermath of the tragic flooding in the area last summer. We repainted the pods, cleared paths, and helped rebuild the fence around the horse arena. The group spent time shoveling manure in High Rocks’ garden, digging up potatoes, planting garlic, and tilling the soil. Some of us made salsa, contributing to High Rocks’ feeding program, which offers free meals to children after school on a regular basis. We worked on building a high tunnel for High Rocks, so they can continue their garden program into the winter. The weather was gorgeous every day, so working outside was a treat.
The CPGC will cover all participants’ costs. Haverford College students and Bryn Mawr College students who are majoring at Haverford College are eligible to apply. Read about last year's program here and contact Janice Lion (jlion [at] haverford.edu) with questions.
