Seeking Global Citizenship: A Photo Contest
Details
Haverford College’s Center for Peace and Global Citizenship is hosting its inaugural photo contest to highlight the work, learning, and action of Tri-Co (Haverford, Bryn Mawr, and Swarthmore) students during the last academic year.
We are looking for photos that display the varied social justice, human rights, and environmental preservation work students have undertaken in cooperation with individuals and organizations around the world. We expect that all photos will represent ethical awareness and reflection. To that end, please review these guidelines for ethical photography. The guidelines include:
- Choose photos that represent the people truthfully and show dignity, support and integrity.
- Ensure those being represented in the images maintain the right to share their story in their own way.
- Abstain from using photos that potentially stereotype, sensationalise or discriminate against people, situations or places.
- Use images, messages, and case studies with the full understanding, participation, and permission of the subjects (or subjects’ parent/guardian).
Tri-Co students and partners in communities around the world: from Philadelphia to Oaxaca, Tulsa to Berlin, Cape Town to Canterbury, are encouraged to apply. Entrance makes you eligible to win one of 5 gift cards of $50 each from Amazon or the Haverford Bookstore, contributes to the discussion of ethically engaged work and its visual representation, and showcases the deep dedication of Haverford, Bryn Mawr, and Swarthmore College students to work of this kind.
For this social media contest, we are looking for beautiful photos that represent:
- Peace
- Social Justice
- Global Citizenship
- Applied Ethics
- The Haverford College motto of “Not just more learned, but imbued with better learning”
Submitting to the contest is easy:
- Upload a photo to your Instagram account (or create a new one here),
- Caption it with a few sentences that tell us why the photo embodies one or more of the themes above,
- Tag it with @haverford_cpgc / #haverfordcpgc and the category you’re entering (e.g. #peace, #socialjustice, #globalcitizenshp, #appliedethics, #HCmotto).
- Then upload your photo and its caption to CPGC Public Read/Write folder on the Storage network or, if you’re not currently a Haverford student, email the original to hc-cpgc@haverford.edu. Be sure to indicate your Instagram handle in your email, so that we’re able to match photos with entrants. All photos submitted in the contest may be used in Haverford College Center for Peace and Global Citizenship materials, offline or online.
The deadline for entering is Sunday, September 3rd. The winner will be chosen by a panel of judges, taking into account the amount of engagement the photos receive on social media (More “likes or loves” increases your chances of winning, but is not the only criterion taken into account).
Students sponsored by the CPGC for summer 2017 internships must enter one photo for each of the categories above. Photos representing Tri-Co activities during the 2016-17 academic year, or summer 2017, are all eligible for inclusion. Students, connected community members, staff, and faculty are eligible to compete, although this competition is not open to professional photographers employed by the colleges for photography purposes (students already working for such offices, however, are still eligible).
