Bi-Co Global Asia Concentration Keynote Lecture: Distinguished Visitor Avery Goldstein, David M. Knott Professor of Global Politics and International Relations, University of Pennsylvania.
The Distinguished Visitors Program at Haverford College welcomes Dr. Avery Goldstein, the David M. Knott Professor of Global Politics and International Relations, University of Pennsylvania to speak on Wednesday February 25, 2015 at 4:30pm in Chase Auditorium.
During the first half of the twenty-first century we are witnessing a shift of historic significance. For almost 500 years the West dominated and shaped world affairs. That era is ending. In the coming decades the future of the world economy, the potential for catastrophic wars, and the fate of a troubled ecosystem will turn on events in Asia. As such, the choices made by the diverse and increasingly capable countries of Asia will be key influences on the quality of life around the world. China's rise and its sometimes troubled relations with its neighbors and with the United States are a big part, but only part, of the story. What are major signs that Asia's era is dawning? What are the key challenges the region faces? What are its prospects going forward? These are vital questions that demand the attention, not just of scholars, but of responsible citizens everywhere.
Dr. Goldstein's talk,“Why Asia? Why Now?” is sponsored by the Bi-Co Global Asian Concentration; Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures, and Department of History, Haverford College; Department of Growth and Structure of Cities, and Department of Political Science, Bryn Mawr College
